A Quick Guide to Understanding Material Safety Data Sheets
When working with paints and coatings, you may be provided with or need to request a Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS). In this article we will help you understand each section of the SDS and explain how to find and use this information effectively.
What is a Material Safety Data Sheet (SDS)?
A Material Safety Data Sheet (MSDS), now more commonly referred to as a Safety Data Sheet (SDS), is a document that provides information on the safe handling, storage, use, and disposal of a chemical product. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Paints
- Varnishes
- Solvents
- Cleaners
- Adhesives
- Fuels
A Safety Data Sheet will outline any potential hazards and recommended safety measures, which helps users of that product be able to make a risk assessment.
Paint Safety Data Sheets describe the hazards the chemical presents. They also give information on handling, storage and emergency measures in case of an accident.
Why is a Safety Data Sheet Important?
- Protects users and operators through clear health and safety information
- Supports workplace safety and risk assessments
- Required for compliance (UK COSHH)
- Provides emergency information
What Does the Safety Data Sheet Cover?
Section 1: Product identification
Details the product and supplier information, including emergency contact numbers.
Section 2: Hazard identification
Lists the potential hazards of the product so you can take steps to reduce risk.
Section 3: Composition
Identifies the components in the product and their approximate percentage.
Section 4: First aid measures
Explains what to do if someone is exposed to the product. Make sure your first aid representative knows these steps.
Section 5: Fire fighting measures
Gives advice on the right type of fire extinguisher to use and precautions to prevent fires. Keep containers closed to limit flammable vapours.
Section 6: Accidental release measures
Guides you on handling spills safely, including shutting down ignition sources and cleaning up.
Section 7: Handling and storage
Covers how to store and handle the product safely, including avoiding sources of ignition.
Section 8: Exposure controls / personal protection
Explains the protective equipment you should use and exposure limits.
Section 9: Physical and chemical properties
Covers the physical and chemical properties of the product, such as appearance, smell and flash point.
Section 10: Stability and reactivity
Outlines conditions and materials to avoid to keep the product stable.
Section 11: Toxicological information
Lists health risks from exposure, including short-term and long-term effects.
Section 12: Ecological information and disposal considerations
Explain how to dispose of the product and any impact the substance might have on the ecology.
Section 13: Transport information
Details the correct way to transport the product, including any hazardous classifications.
Section 14: Regulatory information
Provides relevant health, safety and environmental legislation that applies to the product.
Section 16: Other information (Revision dates and additional notes)
Where to Find a Safety Data Sheet (SDS)
Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are usually available on the manufacturer’s website. If a copy isn’t online, you can request one directly from the manufacturer.
What Other Data Sheets Are There Besides an SDS?
There are other types of data sheets, such as Technical Data Sheets (TDS). A TDS provides detailed information on how to apply and use a product, including application methods, coverage, drying times, and performance characteristics. Unlike an SDS, a TDS does not cover health and safety information.
If you need help understanding an SDS or have questions about the information it contains, your manufacturer can provide guidance and advice to ensure safe and effective use of the product.
